The Mexican Women Association in Indiana

For more than two decades, a trusted community anchor for Mexican and Latino families across the Hoosier state — and the organization behind Mexican Gala.

Support our work

Our history

The Association was founded soon after the establishment of the Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis in 2002, at the suggestion of the Mexican Consul, to organize the efforts and activities of Mexican women in the Hoosier state.

Since then the purpose has stayed the same: to help and assist Mexican and Latino immigrants living in Indiana, and to share the many traditions and subcultures of Mexico with the broader community. Over more than two decades the organization has grown into a trusted community anchor, offering culturally grounded programs that respond to the changing needs of the families we serve.

Our Mission

To help and assist Mexican and Latino immigrants living in Indiana, to share the traditions and subcultures of Mexico with our wider community, and to build the leadership of Latina women across the state.

Our priorities

As the needs of the immigrant community grow and change, our work has to grow with them — especially since there are not enough Latino-serving organizations in Indiana.

Eliminating domestic violence
Outreach, referral and culturally grounded support for families living with abuse.
Promoting health education
Bilingual health information and navigation for families the system tends to miss.
Supporting survivors of sexual violence
Accompaniment and advocacy for survivors, in their own language.
Community engagement and mobilization
Bringing neighbors together around the issues that shape daily life.
Building a parent support program
Helping parents navigate schools, systems and raising children between two cultures.
Strengthening partner collaboration
Working alongside the agencies that can deliver services we cannot deliver alone.
Developing women's leadership and inclusion
Training, visibility and opportunity for the next generation of Latina leaders.
Advancing equality and activism
Development, equality and community activism as ongoing commitments, not campaigns.

Three decades of growth

Why this work keeps getting bigger

1
Latinos in Indianapolis in 1990, about one percent of the city

By the year 2000, the Hispanic population had nearly quadrupled
1
By 2020, thirteen percent of Indianapolis — two thirds of Mexican origin

Our partner at the gala

Understanding the community's present needs, the Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis joined the efforts of the Association and has been our partner at the gala ever since. Together we present an evening built to share Mexican culture, art and tradition with the whole city — and to highlight the distinct regions and subcultures that make up Mexico.

The 2026 edition, Catrina Night, honors ancestry through art, music, dance and ofrendas at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.
